Richmond spearhead Jack Riewoldt is happy being a bit-part player, as long as the Tigers are kicking a winning score.

Riewoldt kicked one goal in Richmond’s win against GWS at the MCG last Saturday, but was more pleased with the team’s ability to spread the goalkicking load.

“I’m not totally focused on that (kicking goals).   My role is to kick goals, but the more score involvements I can be involved in, the better for the side,” Riewoldt told Triple M.

“I only kicked one goal on the weekend, but we still managed to kick 13.  We found a lot of midfield goals, which are key to winning games these days.

“Hopefully, we can continue to kick winning scores.”

Riewoldt has adjusted well to the role of the forward in the modern game, which often means spending large amounts of time up the field and adhering to a defence-first mentality.

While making the important adjustment, the dual Coleman Medallist has still managed to kick 46 goals at an average of 2.5 per match.

“It’s the modern game.  You really want to try and defend first,” Riewoldt said.

“That’s probably our motto.  We try to defend, and that’s pushing up the ground and trying to pick up the midfielders’ men, so they can get back and help out our backs.

“We’ve seen a lot of goals this year, I reckon, from back patterns, nearly the old Pagan’s paddock, (where) guys are running back and kicking goals over the top.

“It’s tough to play full-forward these days.  You end up playing more as a half-forward.”
