Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has pointed to two areas of improvement within the Tigers’ game over the opening five rounds of the 2012 season that he believes are vital to the team’s plans for sustained success in the future.

Notwithstanding Richmond’s 1-4 record, Hardwick likes what he sees with the Tigers’ defence and midfield.

“There’s no doubt defensively we’ve improved,” he said.

“Our numbers suggest that, our scores against have gone down significantly, the amount of pressure we put on the ball (carrier) has been a hell of a lot better, and our tackle efficiency has also improved . . .

“Another pleasing thing has been our midfield depth.
“The ability of players such as Grigg, Foley, Tuck, Conca and Ellis to go through the midfield has been enormously important for us.

“We don’t rely as heavily on Cotchin, Deledio, Martin, to always be playing well, which is a real sign of a side that’s on the way up.”

Although Hardwick admitted the Tigers’ forward line was down on its output at the moment, he was confident that would be rectified in coming weeks with better ball use inside the forward-50 area.
