Toby Nankervis is not the sort of player to rest on his laurels.
The young ruckman gratefully grabbed his opportunity at Richmond last season following a couple of frustrating years trying to establish himself in the strong Sydney side.
He quickly became the Tigers’ No. 1 ruckman and went on to play a major role in the 2017 premiership triumph.
Fast forward to Richmond’s second 2018 JLT Community Series match, against North Melbourne at Ikon Park last night, and Nankervis showed that he had lost none of his hunger to succeed.
Nankervis finished with 21 disposals, including 13 contested possessions, five clearances, four marks, an equal game-high seven tackles, seven score involvements, 13 pressure acts and 17 hit-outs.
They’re impressive statistical numbers, especially considering he was opposed to North’s imposing ruck duo of Todd Goldstein and Braydon Preuss.
While Nankervis has made giant strides in his football development over the past 12 months, he has targeted a particular area of improvement that he’s keen to focus on.
He wants to become a viable option up forward for the team to complement what he provides in the ruck.
Nankervis showed some promising signs of his goalkicking potential last season, scoring a total of 11 goals, with a best return of three against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium in Round 19.
“Hopefully I can add that to my game the next couple of years, the ability to go forward. That’s what the good ruckmen do,” Nankervis told ‘Fox Footy’.
