Riewoldt started Sunday's game on 59 goals, three behind Fremantle skipper Matthew Pavlich and Geelong's Tom Hawkins, and tied with 2008 and 2011 winner Lance Franklin (Hawthorn).
But Riewoldt passed Pavlich and Hawkins when he kicked his fourth goal, at the 28-minute mark of the third quarter against the Power, ensuring he would win his second Coleman Medal in three years.
Riewoldt's goal came after he received a free kick for a push by Port full-back Alipate Carlile as he flew for a mark about 15m out from Richmond's goals.
But like many at the MCG Riewoldt did not know how to feel after Sunday's game, in which the Tigers went from 18 points down late in the third quarter to 12 points up at the 20-minute mark of the last quarter, only to let the Power catch them with 21 seconds to go.
"It's always weird after a draw, but today was even weirder," Riewoldt said.
"Last game of the season, obviously I won the Coleman Medal, but it's tough, really tough.
"Because to watch your leader [Chris Newman] and one of your best mates … say that he's going to finish up captaining us was really tough and then not to get the victory for him was even tougher.

"So it's a bit of a bittersweet feeling."
The pro-Richmond crowd at the MCG on Sunday was right behind Riewoldt's quest to secure the Coleman, oohing and aahing every time he got remotely near the ball.
Riewoldt certainly appreciated their support.
"I think the greatest thing about our fans is it's not about the goal you kick to win the Coleman ... it's any goal that this football club kicks that our fans really celebrate."
It took Riewoldt 18 minutes to open his account against Port, kicking truly from 35m out after marking on the lead.
Nine minutes later he almost made it two after he hit the post from outside 50m.
Riewoldt's had to wait until the 14-minute mark of the second quarter to get his second goal. He made hard work of it too.
After teammate Robbie Nahas bustled the ball towards the Tigers' goalsquare, Riewoldt twice missed attempts to soccer the ball through from close range before - with the help of a shepherd from teammate Dustin Martin - he made no mistake with his third attempt.
Riewoldt's third major came at the 24-minute of the third term when he kicked truly from 35m dead in front after Trent Cotchin found him with a pinpoint low pass.
Riewoldt kicked 78 goals to win the 2010 Coleman.
