Sabrina Frederick and Tessa Lavey celebrate Sunday's Round 8 AFLW win over West Coast.

Richmond wing Tessa Lavey will not play in the Tigers' final round AFLW clash against the Western Bulldogs on Friday night due to Australian Opals commitments.

The 27-year-old flew to the Gold Coast on Monday to participate in a week-long Australian Opals training camp as the squad ramps up preparations for the postponed Tokyo Olympics.

It brings an end to an impressive debut AFLW season for Lavey, who played six consecutive games after making her debut in the round three loss to Collingwood.

The cross-coder averaged 11 disposals and close to two tackles per game for the Tigers, impressing with her running capacity and kicking skills.

Richmond Head of Women’s Football, Kate Sheahan, wished Lavey all the best for the next phase of her sporting pursuits.

“Basketball and Tokyo become Tessa’s priority now, and we will certainly be cheering her on,” she said.

“We loved what Tessa brought to our football program this year, and while we cannot wait to see her back playing football next season, we will be excited onlookers while her basketball becomes the focus over the next period of time.”

Richmond AFLW coach Ryan Ferguson added that Lavey’s knowledge of elite sport had been a huge help to Richmond’s developing group.

“Tessa has delivered some nice moments for us this year, and her energy and professionalism around the place is infectious,” he said.

“When she gets the ball in her hands, it is almost a bonus, she has got so much speed and power, and she’s still learning a bit of the footy, a bit of polish and the timing and the nous to finish off her work.

“Tessa made a really positive start to her football career this season.”

Richmond’s final round game against the Western Bulldogs starts at 5.10pm this Friday night at Whitten Oval.
