Richmond's unfurling of the 2017 premiership flag.

Crowd capacity for Richmond’s 2021 season-opener against Carlton at the MCG will likely determine whether the Tigers unfurl their back-to-back 2019 and 2020 premiership flags on the night.

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale told 3AW’s Sportsday program that such a momentous occasion for the Club was deserving of the biggest possible crowd under the current COVID-19 restrictions in Victoria.

“Clearly, it’s a really proud moment, and we want to share that with as many members and fans as possible. Flags are really hard to win, but to have the opportunity to unfurl two is remarkable,” Gale said.

“We’re hopeful there’d be 50 per cent capacity – that would lend itself to a fairly sizeable crowd, and so we’re planning along those lines.

“But I’m not quite sure whether that’s going to be the case. I just think we need to watch and wait.

“At the end of the day, we want to share this moment with as many of the Richmond family as we can. So, it may be Round 1, hopefully. It may not.

“You want to maximise the amount of people in the ground . . .”
