Friday, September 8, 2017 will go down as a red-letter day in Tigerland history.
It was on that day, or more specifically night, that Richmond broke a huge hoodoo against Geelong.
The Tigers had lost 13 consecutive games to the Cats, and 19 out of their previous 20 encounters with them.
In fact, since Richmond had defeated Geelong in the 1980 second semi-final at Waverley Park, two weeks before capturing the premiership, its record against the Cats was just 12 wins and a whopping 44 losses from 56 games.
That all changed, however, in the 2017 qualifying final under the MCG Friday night lights.
The Tigers finally turned the tables on their long-time nemesis, beating them by 51 points en route to the drought-breaking premiership that year.
A preliminary final victory over Geelong ensued in 2019, followed by this year’s glorious Grand Final triumph at the Gabba.
Richmond has now win six of its past seven games against the Cats, with three of them being those crucial finals.
And all that misery inflicted by Geelong on the Tigers, over so many years, is now just a very distant memory.
