The AFL’s Free Agency period may seem like a new concept to Richmond fans, but it’s something key members of the Tigers’ football staff have long been waiting for.

In the past few years, the Club has made specific personnel appointments, pruned its list and sorted out player contracts carefully, to ensure it has the necessary tools to be involved during the league’s inaugural Free Agency period.

“We initially appointed Blair Hartley (Richmond opposition and list analyst) with this period specifically in mind, back in 2010,” Richmond’s General Manager of Football, Craig Cameron, told Roar Vision.

“While he’s done some opposition and list management, and traded for players like Shaun Grigg and Bachar Houli and Ivan (Maric), we initially looked to him to make sure we were ready for Free Agency when it came in.

“We’ve resourced that area specifically to improve our list with a more mature player.  We’ve been preparing for quite a while.”

Richmond landed the first player in the Free Agency period on Monday, signing Adelaide’s Chris Knights to a three-year deal.

The 26-year-old is exactly the type of player the Tigers intended to lure during this month’s player movement period.

“We want to bring in someone who can play for four or five years.  And, we want someone who come in and add to our group, not only through performance on-field, but in a leadership capacity off-field, and have all the values that our footy club holds,” Cameron said.
