Something to crow about
Richmond broke a 12-year drought when it defeated Adelaide by 22 points in their Round 23 encounter at AAMI Stadium yesterday (Sunday, August 28).
It was the first time the Tigers had beaten the Crows in Adelaide since 1999.
Round 9 of the 1999 season, on Saturday, May 22, was when Richmond had previously tasted success against Adelaide on its own turf.
On that occasion, the Jeff Gieschen-coached Tigers slogged their way to a meritorious 11-point victory over the Malcolm Blight-coached Crows - 12.6 (78) to 9.13 (67) - on a cold, wet night under the lights of Football Park, as it was known back then.
Nick Daffy collected the three Brownlow Medal votes for his 36-possession performance against the reigning premiers, with Adelaide’s Brett James getting the two votes, and Tiger midfield star Matty Knights, the one vote.
Richmond’s leading goalkickers on the night were Matthew Richardson and Wayne Campbell, with three apiece.
To underline how long ago that was, a 19-year-old ‘tall’ by the name of Brad Ottens was playing his 21st game for the Tigers, and a 21-year-old Kane Johnson was playing his 45th game with the Crows, several years before he pulled on the famous Yellow and Black guernsey.
Before last Sunday’s clash, Richmond had lost 13 of its previous 15 games against Adelaide.blog comments powered by Disqus
