RICHMOND'S squad of 25 to play Sydney on Sunday contains one major shock – Graham Polak has been named.

Joining him in the extended team are midfielder Shane Tuck, defender Alex Rance and ruckman Angus Graham.

The only omission at this stage is Trent Cotchin, whose season is over due to a hip injury.

Cotchin will have surgery in the next week.

Polak was hit by a tram after the round 14 loss to Carlton last year, and was placed in an induced coma for several days after suffering bruising to his brain.

He has worked his way back through practice matches, then the VFL seconds and in the last month or so, the Coburg seniors, where he has consistently featured in the best.

Football manager Ross Monaghan said while Polak's inclusion was a big step, being in the 25 held no guarantees for selection into the final 22.

"He's in the squad, he's being considered, and we'll make the decision tomorrow, based on the conditions on the weekend," he told richmondfc.com.au.

Monaghan said all four deserved their inclusion after doing well at Coburg, Richmond's VFL-affiliated side, but that it would be tough to break into the side after a couple of good wins.

"Yeah, all three have been good at Coburg, and the other guys who are in the squad have been holding their own in their positions, so which way we go, in terms of final selection, we'll decide tomorrow afternoon."
