Oval works on schedule
The redevelopment of Punt Road Oval, at the ME Bank Centre, is in full swing, with the works on schedule to be completed in time for the players’ pre-season tra
The redevelopment is a major piece of work, involving a new drainage system, bigger ground dimensions and improved surface.
The Final Fighting Tiger Fund push is on. Help the Tigers reach the target of $6 million.
It is a much-needed redevelopment, which would not have been possible without generous donations from Richmond supporters and patrons of the Fighting Tiger Fund; the Club’s fundraising initiative designed to eradicate debt and invest in football.
Joe McCullagh, General Manager of StrathAyr, the company contracted to complete the redevelopment, said significant work had already been completed in the first month.
“We took grass off the top and then we excavated the field and filled it. On the top side, near the old grandstand, we’ve gone down nearly a metre, and on the Punt Road side . . . we’re filling it nearly a metre deep,” McCullagh said.
The uneven surface and dysfunctional drainage system contributed significantly to the need for the redevelopment, which had been planned for several years.
McCullagh added that when the works are completed, the oval will be similar in size to the MCG and Etihad Stadium.
The new drainage will keep the ground drier and the surface will allow the players more sure-footing when training.
