Hard-hitting midfielder Matt Arnot has attributed Richmond’s hard-fought victory over the Gold Coast last weekend to sticking to a pre-game plan focused on pressure and contested possession.
Playing in tough, tropical weather conditions at Cazalys Stadium in Cairns, the 19-year-old was a solid contributor in the Tigers’ first win against the Suns.
In only his second AFL game, Arnot collected 15 possessions and kicked his first AFL goal, in Richmond’s nine-point win.
“We had a few focuses to retain inside 50, (apply) pressure, pressure, pressure and (win) contested ball,” Arnot said in a ‘Roar Vision’ interview with injured defender Dylan Grimes after the game.
Arnot collided heavily with Gold Coast defender Rory Thompson in the third quarter, in an act typical of the physical nature of his playing style.
“It’s one of my strengths. I’m a pretty developed body…I’ve always been like that since I was a junior, and it’s one of the styles of my game,” he said.
