Creative inside midfielder Pat Contin has returned to Richmond, as a key part of the Tigers’ new standalone VFL team’s playing list for 2014.

Contin, who spent a couple of years on Richmond’s rookie list (2010-11), followed by a season each at VFL clubs Coburg and Sandringham, is enthusiastic about the role he’ll play with the Tiger ‘twos’.

“It’s really good.  It’s going to be a pretty exciting experience, I think, having our own standalone team,” Contin told ‘Roar Vision’.

“Obviously, we had the affiliation with Coburg for a while, and it was good, but I think we’re going to be able to take the next step in the VFL next year.

“I’m still pretty good mates with a lot of the guys, so to have the ability to come back and play with them next year, it’s going to be a lot of fun.

“It definitely made it a bit easier for my decision, the fact that they did show a little bit of trust in me, to want me to come back.  I never really wanted to leave in the first place, so it was pretty good to come back, and good to know you’re wanted.”

Apart from bolstering the midfield in Richmond's VFL team, through his ball-winning ability and efficient disposal, Contin also will provide some valuable leadership.

“I’ll be trying to be an on-field leader, as well as an off-field leader, with some of the younger guys that are coming in,” he said.

“I think the fact that I have been here before does put me in a bit more of a good stead with the younger guys that are coming into the system . . .

“I’ll be able to pass on a few tips that I’ve learned along the way, and just be a good back-up to the AFL side.”

The 22-year-old is currently recovering from post-season shoulder surgery, but expects to be available for the VFL’s 2014 opening round.

“I started running a couple of weeks ago.  I’m just slowly building into it, but it’s coming along really well.  I’m just getting everything right and, hopefully, I’ll be back out on the track as soon as possible,” he said.
