Richmond’s standalone VFL team is on the board in season 2014 after a convincing 42-point win over ex-affiliate Coburg at Coburg City Oval on Sunday afternoon.

After a quick start from the Coburg Lions, the Tigers kicked the next six goals of the opening term to build a commanding lead which they were able to hold for the duration of the game.

Nathan Foley was superb all day for the Tigers. He was instrumental around stoppages, ran hard with and without the ball, broke tackles and set a high standard with his delivery inside 50. He finished with 20 possessions and eight clearances.

Anthony Miles, another standout performer for Richmond also finished the game with eight clearances. The midfielder continued his strong run of form, racking up 26 disposals for the game.

The Tigers dominated possession early and converted on-field pressure onto the scoreboard to take a 30-point lead into quarter time.
Ruckman Orren Stephenson played a crucial role in the Tigers’ efficient stoppage work and used his height to spoil in defence.

The second term was more competitive but run-and-carry from Matt McDonough and strong defence from Brad Helbig ensured Richmond maintained its lead at the main break.

Brett O’Hanlon and Ben Lennon had their best games of the year, collecting 24 and 17 disposals respectively. O’Hanlon also kicked a goal to cap off a terrific end-to-end move started by Ben Waite, who was outstanding in the Richmond back line.

Waite won the loose ball in defence and had six rebound 50s. He constantly beat opponents in the air, highlighted by a courageous goal-saving mark running back with the flight. Fellow defender Ben Darrou (22 disposals) was also impressive.

The Tigers punished Coburg’s turnovers in the third term and used the ball well to switch play and counter attack.

Liam McBean set up Ryan Bathie’s third goal and Jake King chimed in with another to ensure the Tigers made a memorable return to Coburg.
