Greenberg’s Grabs, Round 1
Richmond’s star spearhead, Jack Riewoldt, has become the 20th player in Tigerland history to reach the 200-goal milestone.
Riewoldt achieved the feat when he notched his third of four goals in last Thursday night’s opening round loss to Carlton at the MCG.
The 23-year-old is averaging just over two goals per game, having kicked 201 in 91 appearances since making his senior debut with Richmond in 2007.
Considering, however, that Riewoldt took 41 games to chalk up his first 50 goals, you can appreciate just how far he’s come in recent times.
He’s booted 151 in his ensuing 50 games, at a more than respectable average of three goals per match.
The full list of Tigers to crack the double ton of goals is:
970 - Jack Titus
800 - Matthew Richardson
778 - Kevin Bartlett
607 - Michael Roach
548 - Dick Harris
443 - Jack Dyer
369 - Royce Hart
351 - Ray Poulter
344 - Dale Weightman
306 - Jeff Hogg
275 - Percy Bentley
272 - David Cloke
229 - Neil Balme
225 - Billy Wilson
217 - George Bayliss
216 - Paddy Guinane
212 - Chris Naish
209 - Brendon Gale
204 - Roger Dean
201 - Jack Riewoldt
Given Riewoldt’s goalkicking ability, and the fact he’s still only young, he will surely climb high up that Tiger sharpshooting ladder before his career is over.
While on the subject of goalkicking milestones, it was also one of sorts for Tiger Shaun Grigg in Thursday night’s game . . .
Playing against his old side, Grigg scored multiple goals for the first time in his 65-game league career.
The 23-year-old, who was one of the better Richmond players on the night, with 20 touches, kicked two goals, to break his sequence of 16 single goals up to that point.
Take a bow, yet again, Tiger fans . . .
Your excellent turnout at last Thursday night’s season-opener against the Blues, pushed the attendance up to an impressive 78,285.
It was the second biggest crowd for the AFL’s 2012 opening round, with only 179 more people attending the Hawthorn-Collingwood encounter at the ‘G’ the following night.
Thursday night’s clash also attracted the second largest Richmond-Carlton season-opener crowd since the match became a permanent fixture on the AFL calendar in 2007, bettered only by the 87,043, who turned up in Round 1, 2009. The two teams have an average attendance of just under 72,000 in six opening round matches since 2007.
And, it was also the second biggest attendance for a Tigers v Blues attendance at any stage during a season, since the cut-throat 2001 semi-final at the MCG, which drew 83,323.
Richmond had eight players missing from its 2012 Round 1 side, who had played in the corresponding match last year - David Astbury, Jake Batchelor, Daniel Connors, Angus Graham, Brad Helbig, Luke McGuane, Mitch Morton and Matthew White.
Of that list, only Morton is no longer at Tigerland, having been traded to the Sydney Swans at the end of last season.
Bachar Houli is set to play his 50th AFL game, when he lines up for Richmond in Saturday night’s Round 2 clash with Collingwood at the MCG.
It will be Houli’s 24th appearance for the Tigers following his return of 26 games in a four-season career at Essendon.
Finally, this week, congratulations to the Richmond Cricket Club on winning its first premiership since 1999-2000.
Richmond decisively defeated reigning premier team Dandenong in the Premier cricket final at the weekend.
It was a mighty effort by the cricketing Tigers, who had finished 15th the previous year, and were in their first season at their new home base at Waverley’s Central Reserve, after more than 150 years at Punt Road.blog comments powered by Disqus
