Throughout the last two seasons we’ve seen the steady rise of Trent Cotchin, who against Carlton had a stellar performance getting the Tigers off to a great start with 11 possessions in the first quarter. In the second quarter he was given a tagger in Corazzo, which subdued his influence but like all great players you just can’t keep him down.

Cotchy was drafted from the Northern Knights in the 2007 draft, taken at pick #2 overall great things were always expected of the midfielder. He debuted in 2008 and played 15 games and averaged 16.4 disposals at the age of 18.

Though he was impressive in 2008 he struggled with injury, playing only 15 games, he still received a rising star nomination and polled 3rd with 21 votes behind Rhys Palmer with 44 and Cyril Rioli with 37 votes.

The start of 2009 Cotchy suffered a calf injury which sidelined him until round 8 and though he played only 10 games, he still average 17.7 disposals and managed to impact games. In 2010 it was more of the same having an interrupted pre season played 17 games and averaging 19.5 disposals.

Last season he had an injury free preseason and had a real impact on clearances, as most Tiger fans would remember, he started to dominate in midfield possessions. It seemed when one midfielder had a quiet day another would fire and Cotchy had his fair share of dominant performances.

Last year he averaged 24.1 disposals in 22 games making him one of the elite young midfielders in the game. In 2011 he polled 15 Brownlow votes ranking him in the top 20 of AFL players and also took out the coveted Jack Dyer medal for best and fairest.

In the first game of this season Trent massed 27 disposals and impacted greatly in the first and third quarters, he managed to get on the scoreboard with 2 goals and effected 8 tackles giving an all round performance of the great player he is and will be.

Last season he clocked up, a career high 38 disposals against Geelong in round 18, here’s hoping he can repeat that performance in round 4. It’s going to be a tough start to the season playing the top 4 from last season in the first 5 rounds, but I reckon we can make a good go of it and get a couple of wins on the board.

With the recent signings of Dimma and Lids the boys can concentrate on the footy. I am personally ecstatic with the re-signing of Dimma, and Lids wanting to see out his career at Tigerland. Furthermore I am excited that footy is back and I can’t wait to sing the Yellow and black at the top of my voice.
