Richmond and Melbourne football clubs have made a joint donation to Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance to support the important role the iconic memorial plays in honouring the past and educating future generations.
The joint $10,000 donation was announced by Richmond President, Peggy O’Neal during the official function at the two team's Anzac eve match last month, which drew a crowd of more than 58,000 at the MCG.
"The Shrine is central to this city's Anzac Day commemoration but it should never be forgotten the important role it plays in educating people all year round," Richmond CEO, Brendon Gale said.
"The Shrine provided us great support in the build up to our Anzac eve game and I know they also support many other clubs during the lead up to Anzac Day.
"Richmond and Melbourne football clubs thank them for the support they have provided us, the industry and this city and it is appropriate we support them in return."
Melbourne CEO Peter Jackson echoed Gale's comments.
"We are very pleased to be supporting the Shrine. From time to time the management and staff of the Shrine have provided great support to Victorian AFL Clubs and players, which Melbourne and Richmond Football Clubs want to acknowledge in this small way,” Jackson said.
Air Vice-Marshal Chris Spence AO (Rtd), Chairman of the Shrine Trustees thanked both clubs on behalf of the Trustees.
“I would like to acknowledge the generous contribution from the Richmond and Melbourne football clubs in supporting the Shrine of Remembrance work in commemoration and educating the wider community,” Mr Spence said.
“Each year we welcome groups of AFL players to the Shrine who come to pay their respects and learn more about the Anzac spirit. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment,” he said.
