1921 Grand Final review
This game was played in very wet and muddy conditions before a crowd of 43,122 people.
Carlton had a tall pacy side while Richmond were a strong physical side. Carlton won the toss and in the early part of this game appeared the more superior side. Although Carlton had most of the play, they were unable to penetrate the Richmond defence led by Hislop and Thorp.
After half-time, the game became a scramble, and this is where Richmond's ruckman took over. The Tigers outscored the Blues in this term 3.1 to 2 points to trail Carlton by two points at the last change.
Richmond hit the front early in the last quarter courtesy of a snap-shot goal by Hugh James, but the Blues were quick to reply. The ground was still very muddy and as such, the game had developed into a slog.
With eight minutes left, Richmond rover Norm Turnbull marked and scored the winning goal from twenty yards out. After this score, the game became a battle of defences.
In a tense finish, centre-half-back, Max Hislop, combined brilliantly with full-back, Vic Thorp, to keep Carlton out of the game. With less than a minute to play, the ball was kicked toward Carlton's Alex Duncan, who was near goal. But a brilliant solo effort by Hislop saved the game. He threw himself between the ball and his opponent and intercepted the pass. This effort certainly saved the game and gave Richmond their second successive Premiership, by just 4 points.
