We continue our special series reliving Richmond’s pre-season build-up to the glorious, drought-breaking 1967 premiership triumph. From the archives of ‘The Age’ newspaper, we present a report of a Tigers’ intra-club practice match played this time 50 years ago.
“Richmond selectors watched Saturday’s practice match with mixed feelings.
The selectors were pleased with the performance of Prahran recruit centreman Kevin Sheedy and they saw a vast improvement in young Reserve Grade follower, George McInnes.
But they had reason for concern about the form of the rovers who were disappointing.
Sheedy’s opponent was experienced Roger Dean, but the young VFA player still finished on top. His first half was particularly good.
Twenty-year-old McInnes, recruited from Corowa last season, is the most improved player at Richmond this year.
Opposed to regular ruckmen Neville Crowe and Michael Patterson, McInnes more than held his own. He knocked the ball clearly from the centre bounces and boundary throw-ins and took many good marks.
Powerfully built, 6ft 4in and 151/2 st., McInnes used his strength cleverly.
Top rover Frank Dimattina did not play because of muscle soreness and the form of the other rovers left much to be desired.
When the rovers managed to get the ball they seemed content to kick lofty punts, instead of looking for teammates.
The best of the rovers was Barry Teague, who took the field in the second half and lifted the standard.
Pat Guinane was again a success at centre half-forward. Mick Erwin was prominent at full-back and John Perry gave a dashing display on the wing.”
