It is open only to those AFL clubs that have inactive players on their list and vacancies available, such as long-term injuries and retirements.

More than 200 players have nominated for the 2019 mid-season draft.

“There’s some incredibly talented players around there that are craving for an opportunity, so I think it’s a great concept,” Hardwick said.

“I love the fact that we’re talking about bringing new players into an AFL environment . . . it’s really exciting.

“For every Sydney Stack that is on an AFL list, I guarantee you there’s 25 that aren’t.

“There’s certainly players out there if you look hard enough, and we’ll certainly be doing that.

“Our (recruiting) guys are really excited by it. It promotes an opportunity . . .

“Anyone that can come in and help this footy club, it’s a great thing.

“And I think it’s a great thing the AFL are doing. There should be more of it.”
