Mav Weller is shaping as a very handy addition to Richmond’s small-forward mix.
The Tigers’ mature-age recruit from St Kilda was a valuable contributor in last Sunday’s JLT Community Series clash with Melbourne at Shepparton.

Weller, playing his first game for Richmond, picked up 14 disposals, took nine marks, applied five tackles and kicked a goal.
His trademark defensive pressure was evident throughout and, overall, he showed why the Tigers were keen to throw him an AFL lifeline via the competition’s new pre-season supplemental selection period.

Competition for small-forward spots in Richmond’s line-up in season 2019 will be fierce.
Daniel Rioli, Jack Higgins and Liam Baker also impressed against the Demons, while Dan Butler was a bit quieter, and Jason Castagna missed the match through injury.
So while Mav Weller isn’t assured of a place in the Tigers’ Round 1 team to face Carlton at the MCG on March 21, that performance by him last Sunday would have boosted his prospects. And you get the feeling if the opportunity presents, he’ll certainly make the most of it.
