1965 was a watershed year in Richmond’s history.
It was the year the Club moved to play home games at the MCG, becoming a co-tenant with Melbourne.
It was the year a lightly-framed, teenage rover named Kevin Bartlett made his senior debut with the Tigers.
It was the year four other eventual multi-Tiger premiership players – Barry Richardson, Geoff Strang, Graham Burgin and John Ronaldson – also debuted.
It was the year Richmond was forced to replace coach Len Smith early in the season because of his ill health, with club great Jack Titus taking the coaching reins.
It also was the year the Tigers emerged from the football wilderness, winning their equal-most games in a season since 1948 (10 wins in an 18-game home-and-away season) and recording their equal-highest ladder placing – fifth – since finishing fourth in 1947.
Richmond didn’t play finals in 1965, but it laid a solid foundation that year for the golden era which followed under Tommy Hafey’s coaching guidance.
Given how important 1965 was from a Yellow and Black historical perspective, we will be cranking up the Tigerland time machine and transporting our supporters back to that year throughout 2025.
The 60-year anniversary of 1965 will highlight Tiger news items, feature articles, match reviews and plenty more.
We look forward to reliving the year of Richmond’s re-emergence in The Spirit of ’65.
