Promising, young Richmond midfield prospect, Brad Helbig, will be sidelined for at least eight weeks with a torn ligament in his left foot.

Helbig, 20, sustained the injury while playing for the Club’s VFL affiliate, Coburg, against Casey Scorpions last Saturday.

He will undergo surgery tomorrow (Wednesday, April 4) and is expected to be placed on Richmond’s long-term injury list while he recuperates.

“Unfortunately Brad got caught in a tackle and his foot caught underneath him.  It has torn one of the ligaments in the mid foot, which will require surgery,” Richmond Elite Performance Manager Matt Hornsby told Roar Vision.

“It’ll be a longer term injury for Brad.  He’ll be in a boot initially, and non weight-bearing.

“It gives us an opportunity to focus on his strength, which he has been working hard on anyway.

“It will be really clear what Brad needs to do in his rehab.  He’ll have a start point and an end point, and a lot of hard work in between,” Hornsby said.

Helbig, recruited from SANFL club West Adelaide, was Richmond’s third pick (No. 47 overall) in the 2010 AFL National Draft.

He played 10 games for Richmond in his 2011 debut AFL season and impressed with his toughness, aggression and long kicking.
