Development coach, Greg Mellor, provides his exclusive summary of how the Richmond-listed players performed at VFL level with Coburg in last Saturday’s match against Casey Scorpions.

Jeromey  Webberley
Produced another good display.  Ran hard in customary fashion to collect 32 possessions and also had seven tackles.  Continued performances like that will see him press for selection back in the Richmond side.

Matt White
Maintained his strong early-season form, with 24 possessions and two goals.  His outstanding running ability enabled him to get to, and influence, many contests throughout the match.  Continues to use his experience to help teach and instruct the younger players at Coburg.

Matt Arnot
Racked up 21 possessions in a good four-quarter effort.  More importantly, he showed an improvement with his ability to play defensively when the opposition had possession.

Brett O’Hanlon
Was quieter than in the opening round the previous week.  He worked hard enough, but often found himself caught between contests.  Underlined his kicking skills with a top goal from outside 60 metres.

Piva Wright
A solid performance until he came off the ground during the third quarter.  Shows a lot of promise as a key defender, even though he was a bit quieter than the previous week.

Jake Batchelor
Played well across the backline.  Was very strong at the ball and did not allow his opponent an easy kick all day.  Also provided the team with some good run offensively and used the ball efficiently.

Andrew Browne
Worked his way into the game well and took some strong, contested marks.  His second half and, in particular, his last quarter, was of a very high standard.  His tap work constantly gave the team’s midfielders first use of the ball and was a significant factor in bringing Coburg back into the game.

Brad Helbig
Was injured early and took no further part in the game.

Angus Graham
Started impressively and was influential, particularly in the first half.  His intensity and ability to follow up after the contest, continues to improve.  He is not far away from a dominant four-quarter effort.

Matt Dea
Another solid performance.  Was very strong defensively and allowed his opponent little space to move.  Due to the windy conditions, however, he also found himself caught in between contests at times.  As a result, he was unable to have the same impact offensively as the previous week and during the practice matches.

Tom Derrickx
Provided the team with a target to kick to in his role as a key forward.  Took five strong marks and his follow-up work from the contests created was also pleasing.  This reflects a growing confidence and intensity with his game.

Todd Elton
Jumped at the footy and created a lot of contests, but did not manage to take as many marks as in the opening round.  The pleasing part of his performance was the seven tackles he applied, as there had been a key focus in improving his defensive actions.

Steve Verrier
Had his first game at senior VFL level and, while still a developing player, showed he has nice foot skills and an ability to run and carry the ball.  Would have gained invaluable experience from the game.

Ben Darrou
Also made his senior VFL debut and looked very comfortable in his role as a key defender.  Was defensively sound and finished the game with eight spoils.  His offensive game will continue to improve as he gains more confidence in his ability to influence a match.
