Richmond development coach Mark Williams rates second-year Tiger Brett O’Hanlon as the most coachable of the young players at the Club.
In the second of a new ‘Roar Vision’ feature series, “Choco Cub Watch”, Williams highlighted O’Hanlon’s exemplary attitude to improving himself as a player at the game’s highest level.
“He wants to do everything right, and we’ll continually acknowledge that. But, at the same time, we’ll encourage him to take more chances,” Williams said.
“Brett’s too quiet. He’s a great guy and I really enjoy his company. But he’s a little bit introverted and, those who know me, know I’m a little bit more the other way. Hopefully, a bit of my DNA drops off on him.

“I encourage him all the time to speak up. We’ve recorded him at training and, to his credit, he really speaks quite a lot on the track and demands the ball . . .
“In the 1-3 year group, he stands up in front of the group, asks questions, and makes comments on what other people are doing.
“So, I think that’s really good for him. All those opportunities are going to flow on to what happens on the field as well . . .
“When it comes to match day, he plays a role that is really team-orientated, but it’s probably a little detrimental to him getting a lot of the ball. We need to get that mix a bit more getting the ball.

“Obviously, he wants to make it a bit more than he has.
“He tells me that he was the substitute in nearly all the games he played (at AFL level in his 2012 debut season), so it’s a tag he really wants to drop.
“He wants to get on the field and show exactly what he can do.
“I would say right now that’s really up to him.
“The coaches are really supportive of him, but he just needs to do more and more every time he gets the opportunity.”
O’Hanlon, 19, 189cm and 89kg, has played eight games for Richmond after being taken by the Club in the 2012 pre-season draft.
