Richmond VFL has confirmed its playing list ahead of the 2025 Smithy’s VFL premiership season.
The 34-man squad includes 16 new faces, including former North Melbourne and Coburg half-back Tom McKenzie and former Sydney VFL forward Phil Moimoi.
The list features a wealth of promising young talent led by Lachlan Street entering his fourth consecutive season as skipper at the club, as well as Joel Garner and Mutaz El Nour, who will once again support Street as vice-captains this year. Rounding out the leadership group for 2025 is Nicholas Girolami and Liam George.
Richmond’s VFL side will feature three train-on players, Sam Frangalas, George Delimitrou and Hugh White.

51 Austin Johnson
26-Dec-2001 (23 years old), 4th year in program, wing/half back, 182cm
Local club - Cheltenham (Southern FNL)
Austin has played 44 games of VFL, predominantly on a wing, and has this role down to a fine art. He’s a strong overall footballer, endurance runner and all-round athlete. His compliance in the wing position helps us win games and is a strong contest player, sharp decision maker and kicks the ball very well.
52 Mohammed Yassine

Local club - Pascoe Vale (Essendon District FL)
Started as a train on in his first year and has progressed over time into one of our more dangerous and impactful half forward options. Speed is his best attribute and his work rate is excellent. Good user of the ball and kicks goals.
53 Joel Garner

Local club - Wandin (Outer East FL)
Been super for us since joining. Works full time in our AFL program as an Indigenous Player Development Manager. Drafted to Port Adelaide from the talent pathway, so has top level experience, and is a great connector between AFL and VFL for us. He’s our enforcer - super physical and throws his weight around.
54 Tom McCarthy

Local club - Dingley (Southern FL)
Tom impressed in his first year, playing 15 games. A composed and balanced player, he has great footy smarts, clean ball handling, and deceptive speed. His leadership will be key this year.
55 Lachlan Street

Local club - Frankston YCW (Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL)
It’s his 7th year in the program - his fourth as skipper. Suffered a heartbreaking ACL this year after previously being incredibly durable. Has always been a mid but moved to the backline last year and had a significant impact. He’s a big bodied utility that reads the game well and naturally finds the footy, and is a natural connector of people and relationship builder. So passionate about the club and a terrific leader.
56 Lachlan Wilson
22-Oct-1998 (26 years old), 2nd year in program, inside mid/half forward, 172cm
Local club - Heidelberg (Northern FNL)
Lachlan is a local footy star who took his VFL chance and won our Best & Fairest in his first season. He’s a tough, smart contest-to-contest midfielder with elite awareness and decision-making.
57 Mutaz El Nour
14-Aug-2001 (23 years old), 3rd year in program, hybrid defender, 192cm
Local club - Deer Park (Essendon District FL)
One of our vice-captains, Mutaz is a defensive general. He reads the game superbly, is highly competitive, and sets up play from the back. Injuries have held him back, but he remains a key player. He is also involved at the Bachar Houli Foundation as a Victorian Programs Coordinator.
58 Phillip Moimoi

Local club - Newport (Western Region FL)
Has moved back to Melbourne after 10 games in 2024 with Sydney VFL. Originally an NGA player with us, Phillip is strong, fast, and powerful with AFL-level traits.
59 Nicholas Girolami

Local club - Mt Eliza (Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL)
Part of the leadership group this year. Went down with a very innocuous foot stress fracture in Round 2 that wiped him out for most of the year. He returned in time to play in the Mt Eliza flag. Those high hopes will continue with us next year with a clean bill of health. He is an athletic specimen at 191cm, but can run, is strong and has power.
60 Tom McKenzie

A former North Melbourne draftee with 40 games of VFL experience, Tom is a strong ball user and brings speed and outside run. Excited for a fresh start with us. He is the brother of AFLW midfielder Ellie.

A versatile and athletic player, Nick has grown into a leader within the side. He offers flexibility across multiple positions and is a valuable contributor to the team.

A highly athletic defender with the ability to play on both tall and small forwards. His confidence and ability to impact games will be key this year.

Returning after a year in local footy off the back of his debut season with us in 2023 where he played seven games. Max possesses speed, power, and clean ball handling. He’s determined to make his mark in the VFL.

Liam had a standout debut season, showing high football IQ and versatility across multiple positions, and has been rewarded by being included in the leadership group this year.

Local club - Narre Warren
A natural goal kicker who burst onto the scene after dominating local footy, Toner made an immediate impact in the Coates Talent League. His speed, energy, and vertical leap make him a dangerous forward option.
69 Seth Macdonald
14-09-2006 (18 years old), 1st year in program, utility, 189cm
Local club - Rowville
A rangy utility from the Eastern Ranges. He's played in a variety of positions across his two years at the Ranges, predominately on the outside. He has been at his most impactful as a dangerous forward.
70 Will Bravo

Local club - Mt Eliza (Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL)
Will was primed for a breakout season before a serious knee injury in 2024. He brings speed, power, and strength to the contest and is eager to make his comeback.

Returning from senior football in Queensland, Tom is a speedy, agile player with excellent ball use. Provides outside run and an attacking mindset.
74 Harry Scott

Local club - Old Scotch (VAFA)
Harry had a standout debut VFL season, playing eight games before a broken wrist ended his year. A strong-bodied midfielder with clean hands, great vision, and strong marking ability, he impacts both in the midfield and forward. Hard-working and is eager to develop further.
76 Sean Lai
2nd year in program, wing/half forward/half back, 183cm
Local club - Cheltenham (SFNL)
Sean is athletic with a strong upside. Hailing from Cheltenham, he is a damaging left-foot kick off half-back.

Mass has had a strong couple of years at the Western Jets as an inside mid/half forward. He is very smart and very clean at ground level. He’s also got speed and agility and is balanced with ball in hand.

Pala didn’t play a game for us in 2024 due to a knee injury. He played a practice game earlier in the year at half back but as the year progressed we saw scope for him as a pressure forward. He’s of Tongan descent and is big and strong with power, speed and agility.

A dynamic player and exciting prospect with elite speed and agility. Thrived in multiple roles, including midfield, wing, and half-back, showcasing his ability to burst forward and create scoring opportunities. He will mix his time with the Sandringham Dragons this year.

Hugh is tough in the contest, and for this season, he’ll feature for the Northern Knights as a 19-year-old and train with us too.
