Richmond’s recent acquisition of star midfield duo Tim Tarranto and Jacob Hopper from Greater Western Sydney is the first time in three decades that the Club has secured the services of more than one player from the same rival AFL club in the same trade period.
At the end of the 1993 season, the Tigers were involved in a sensational trade deal involving their captain and five-time leading goalkicker Jeff Hogg.
He was traded to Fitzroy in exchange for three players – creative midfielder Paul Broderick, tough utility Michael Gale and rover Matthew Dundas.
Broderick went on to provide Richmond with excellent service, playing 169 games from 1994-01 and winning the Jack Dyer Medal in 1996, Gale was a valuable contributor throughout 91 games from 1994-98, while Dundas had a brief 14-game career at Tigerland from 1994-95.
Hogg spent three seasons with the Lions from 1994-96 for a total of 40 games.
The only other occasion since the advent of the AFL’s trade period that the Tigers picked up multiple players from the same opposition club was in 1991.
Back then, they recruited West Coast forward pair Todd Breman and Stevan Jackson.
Breman played 25 games for Richmond from 1992-93 and Jackson played 21 games in the same period.
