Richmond achieved something in yesterday’s clash with West Coast at the MCG that it hadn’t managed for 26 years.
The Tigers hit the 20-goal mark for the second time this season against the Eagles, having also done that in their Round 7 encounter at Perth’s Optus Stadium.
They scored 20.8 (128) to West Coast’s 13.15 (93) yesterday and 25.15 (165) to 8.8 (56) in Round 7.
You have to go all the way back to 1996 for the previous time Richmond registered 20 goals or more in two home-and-way games against the same opposition during the same season.
In Round 6 of the ’96 season, the Tigers kicked 23.16 (154) to Fitzroy’s 9.8 (62) at the Whitten Oval and in the return match – Round 21 at the MCG – amassed 28.19 (187) to 5.6 (36). That was the last-ever game Fitzroy played in Victoria.
Also, the 12 individual goalkickers Richmond had in yesterday’s win was its equal-most for a match since the opening round of the 2017 season against Carlton at the MCG. On that occasion, the Tigers had 13 separate goalkickers.
