Richmond VFL made the trek down the Monash Freeway on Friday night to continue to sharpen its blade prior to the impending season.
The penultimate practice match of 2022 boasted a full book of the Tigers’ VFL talent, as they matched up against Casey in front of a jovial Friday night crowd.
Richmond’s VFL contingent was diligent, commanding, and potent in attack, holding the Demons at bay, running out winners by 63 points.
Tiger small forward Cam Olden stole the show with five goals, whilst he was handsomely supported by fellow small, Jackson Bowne with three, the final score reading, 18.3 (111) to 7.6 (48).
At a sun-drenched Casey Fields, the Tigers showed that their crafty small forwards are not exclusive to their AFL list, as Olden (3) and Bowne (2) put the Demons to the sword in the opening term.
Both sides pinged the ball between the arcs in the opening minutes of the game, before Olden broke the deadlock with a fine set-shot goal.
Misilifi Faimalo has caught the eye of the Richmond faithful already during this year’s practice match series, with the bouncy half-back’s brutish attack on the ball setting up the Tigers’ second major.
With the ball bubbling in dispute at half-forward, Faimalo seized on the opportunity, swiftly collecting the ball at ground level and delivering inside 50 to Bowne.
Bowne converted the set-shot, capping off a brilliant individual effort by Faimalo.
The Tigers flicked it up a gear following the goal, with Lachie Street surging inside 50 following the resultant centre bounce and goaled on the run from 40.
The Demons hit back with two goals of their own, before Olden and Bowne struck again.
Olden marked in the shadows of quarter-time, easing through his post siren set-shot, which took his goal tally to three for the term.
Richmond was unerring in front of goal and led by 22 points at the first break.
Lively Tiger forward, Olden opened his side’s account in the second term, slotting his fourth and Richmond’s seventh, extending the buffer to 28 points.
Sturdy midfielder, Nathan Oakes struck a blow from beyond the arc and the Tigers were humming.
Goals resulting from free kicks to Mykelti Lefau and John Jorgensen pushed Richmond’s lead out to 47 points, before Casey hit back with two goals in quick succession, before Jack Sexton slotted his first goal of the night.
Richmond held a 42-point lead at the main break, showing greater cohesion than their Demon counterparts.
Whilst the first half was played during "the golden hour", the sun had dropped by the time both sides graced the field for the second half.
Casey bounced out from half-time with the first goal, before Bowne found himself in the right spot once again, crumbing and snapping his third goal for the night.
Matt Bartlett then burst into the corridor inside 50, accepting the ball on the lead and then surgically splitting the middle, before Olden netted a game-high fifth major.
Richmond’s smalls were far too nimble and possessed too much guile for their Demon opponents and were forever threatening either in the air or on the lead.
Zealous midfielder, Will Bravo drifted forward late in the quarter, finishing off finely on the run, however Casey bounced back with back-to-back goals to end the quarter.
The Tigers held a handy 46-point lead at the final change, which they would then add salt into the wound and extend in the last quarter.
A duo of goals was just reward for tireless key forward, Sam Tucker who attacked the ball and man with ferocity in the air for the entirety of the game.
Slick wingman, Austin Johnson capped off the game for Richmond, as he found space on the fat side of the ground and converted his set shot.
