Toby Nankervis has joined an exclusive club at Richmond with his appointment as the Tigers’ co-captain for the 2022 season.

Nankervis becomes the eighth player recruited from a rival AFL/VFL club to take the captaincy reins at Punt Road, and just the third in the past 100 years.

Nankervis joined Richmond during the 2016 AFL trade period following a 12-game career at the Sydney Swans across three seasons.

Five years, and 86 senior appearances on, he’s now a triple Tiger premiership hero and joint skipper of the Club.

The first player to captain Richmond after transferring from another league club was Charlie Pannam, the grandfather of famous Collingwood brothers Lou and Ron Richards.

Pannam, who played 229 games all-up with the Magpies (VFA and VFL), was the Tigers’ inaugural VFL captain when they entered the competition in 1908 and he consequently coached the Club in 1912.

Another Collingwood player, Dick Condon (194 games for the Magpies), was Richmond’s first VFL coach in 1908 and he then took on the captaincy role as well the following season.

Len Incigneri, who had a brief two-game senior career with South Melbourne, later assumed the role of the Tigers’ captain-coach in 1911.

Bill Thomas also arrived at Tigerland via South Melbourne (135 games there) and he was Richmond’s captain from 1914-16 and then again in 1919.

The Tigers’ initial VFL premiership captain in 1920, Dan Minogue, had previously had an 85-game career at Collingwood.

Minogue was Richmond’s captain-coach from 1920-25, guiding the Tigers to back-to-back flags in 1920-21.

Barry Rowlings, a member of Hawthorn’s 1976 premiership team, subsequently skippered Richmond from 1983-84 after playing in the Tigers’ 1980 flag side.

And Kane Johnson, a dual Adelaide premiership player, was Richmond’s captain for four seasons, from 2005-08.

Toby Nankervis also is the first ruckman to lead the Tigers on-field since Mark Lee, who was the Club’s skipper from 1985-87.

Richmond has had a rich history of ruckman captains with top-class performers in Lee, Neville Crowe (1963-66), Roy Wright (1958-59), Bill Morris (1950-51), Jack Dyer (1941-49), Percy Bentley (1932-40) and Dan Minogue (1920-25).
