Football fans and the general community have rallied to help Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision (MRV) raise $750,000 to help find a cure for bone marrow failure syndromes.
Established just four months ago, MRV has received donations from across the country, helping continue the legacy of Jack Riewoldt’s cousin Maddie, who passed away earlier this year.
More than $300,000 was raised through ‘Maddie’s Match’, when 45,722 fans attended the Round 16 game between Richmond and St Kilda.
MRV also announced that financial assistance is being provided to support the ongoing operations and expansion of the only National Aplastic Anaemia Registry (AAR) in the world.
An initial research grant of $80,000, with a potential of a further $160,000 over three years, has been approved to support AAR.
Speaking at the announcement at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Riewoldt described the milestone as a “very exciting day” for everyone involved at Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision.
“Without the support of obviously a lot of Richmond people out there, but St Kilda and football people in general, we wouldn’t have been able to raise this money,” he told Roar Vision.
“It’s been a very trying time for the family and the support we’ve received, not only from our immediate family, but from everyone, has been fantastic.
“There’s obviously been times where we’ve had direct support via social media, or even just in the street, speaking to people, it’s been fantastic.
“We still want to find a cure for bone marrow failure syndrome. Eradicating it is the main goal, but helping people through the process that are suffering at the moment, is the immediate goal.”
