Five games, five wins, one premiership, life membership, and now a two-year contract extension. It’s been a whirlwind start to his AFL career for talented, young Richmond midfielder Jack Graham. He caught up with ‘Roar Vision’ to talk about why he’s so excited about his future with the Tigers.
Reaction to contract extension
“Absolutely pumped to be at Tigerland for another two years (beyond 2018) . . . it’s great. Hopefully, the best footy’s in front of me.”
Tigerland attraction
“Firstly, (the Club) having faith in me, in drafting me and giving me the opportunity to fulfil my dream. And just the culture that we’ve got here . . . It’s really like a second home. All the boys get around you, which is great. I’m really excited what this group can do. Saw what we did last year, but really excited for the future.”
Mighty support of the Tiger Army
“The Tiger Army are amazing. They get you up on the weekend. During the finals campaign, and even the season (home-an-away), to see them stick by us and then for us to deliver a premiership to them, it’s just the top of the ice cream, really.”
Special playing group
“This group’s just a real tight family, really. Everyone’s got each other’s back. We talk about the ‘Richmond Man’ and everyone brings something different to the table and to the football club. That’s how we were so connected last year and, hopefully, in the years coming . . . It’s just about how much we grow to look out for each other, really . . . Everyone really wants to grow as a person and gain that respect. Respect’s probably the No. 1 thing you’ve got to have coming into this club.”
Main pre-season focus
“Well, start off with a full pre-season, which is happening now. Last year was a bit rugged at the start. Getting fitter and stronger, working on my skills . . . quick hands, kicking, whatever that may be.”
Advice to the Club’s new draftees
“A couple of the boys came straight into ‘rehab’ and that’s basically what I did. So they’re a bit down that they’re not out there with the main group, and I know exactly how they feel, as that was me last year. But just for them to keep positive, get around the group, and for us boys to get around them. That really helps. And, before we know, it they’ll be out there in no time.”
Exciting group of Tiger draftees
“There’s a lot of talent there, from small to big, and everyone’s got their own package. Really excited for what that group can do this year, especially Noah Balta and Jack Higgins. But all of them bring potential . . .”
Aims for season 2018
“Just do what I can do to the team, really. Play my role, whether that’s a lockdown or a running mid, whatever. I’m just happy to play my role for the team.”
