Richmond members at the corner of Swan and Jack Streets in Gordon Park on Friday afternoon.

There was a familiar sight in the small Brisbane suburb of Gordon Park, located 9km north of tomorrow’s AFL Grand Final venue, the Gabba this afternoon.

Like what has become a fortunate tradition in Melbourne in recent years, there was a Swan Street filled with Richmond supporters all brought together by an upcoming Tigers blockbuster being played down the road.

And while the quiet Queensland suburb may not have the vibrancy of the heart of Richmond during past Grand Final weeks, the fans were no less passionate.

Fran Kowalski, who along with her three family members make up a large part of the 24 Richmond members in Gordon Park, which is a suburb of only 4,000 said she had been a Richmond fan for over 30 years.

Having moved to Queensland from Melbourne in January this year, Fran said it was watching Richmond most weeks that she would miss the most.

“I cannot even tell you how I excited I was (when Richmond made the move to their Queensland hub), because I had been really sad to be leaving them,” she said.

“This year is a milestone birthday for me so when it came out they were coming I just thought this is my year. Now that they are in the Grand Final, I honestly couldn’t ask for anything more.

“I would not miss it for the world.”

Coincidentally, some other street names in Gordon Park include Lennox, Richmond, Lambert, Jack, Cremorne, Collier and Victoria.

So, if there is to be a Queensland ‘3121’ substitute while the sunshine state borrows Victoria’s week of weeks for the year, let Gordon Park be it.
