Richmond champion Dustin Martin remains right in the mix for a third AFL Coaches’ Association Gary Ayres Award following his dynamic display in last Friday night’s semi-final victory over St Kilda at Metricon Stadium.
Martin, who won the best finals player award in 2017, and again last year, received eight votes from competing coaches Damien Hardwick (Richmond) and Brett Ratten (St Kilda) after dominating the match with 25 disposals, a game-high 10 inside-50s, game-high six clearances, equal game-high nine score involvements and a game-high 597 metres gained.
Star Tigers key forward Tom Lynch picked up five votes for his powerful performance on the night – 17 disposals, six marks, four inside-50s, two goals and nine score involvements.
Dashing defender Bachar Houli also polled five votes. Houli had a game-high 32 disposals, five marks, eight rebound-50s, five inside-50s, an equal team-high six intercepts, six score involvements and 454 metres gained.
Shai Bolton was rewarded for his electrifying three-goal exhibition with four votes. So, too, Shane Edwards, who had 21 disposals, five clearances and seven score involvements, including two goals of his own.
Robust ruckman Toby Nankervis rounded out Richmond’s semi-final vote-winners in the AFLCA Gary Ayres Award. He was given one vote for the key role he played throughout the match – 14 disposals, three marks, four clearances, 15 hit-outs, four intercepts and seven score involvements.
