Richmond had 12 players take the field in a shortened four x 12-minute scrimmage game with Collingwood on the weekend.
VFL and development coach Xavier Clarke, provided individual reports on the players from the 13 v 13 game...
Jack Ross
“Played pretty much the whole game through the midfield and had a pretty big impact around the ball. Even with the shortened game and 13v13, ‘Rossy’ still had some really good contested possessions which is what we really want him to pride himself on, and tackle pressure.
“It was good to see him do well in that part of the game (because) it’s something he has been working on throughout the year.”
Patrick Naish
“Played between sort of half back and wing. His strength is certainly his ball use, but it was good to see him also stepping into contests, and also his pressure around the ball which is something he has really been working on and his contested possessions.
“It was good to see in a short small-numbered game that ‘Naishy’ was able to do the things he has been working on over a period of time up here. It is starting to reflect in his game which has been really good to see and a credit to him.”
Josh Caddy
“Played as a forward and a bit of time on the wing. He had his opportunity and kicked a goal and benefitted from some really good ball use and one-on-one contests.
“Caddy did what he needed to do to be able to get some game time and scrimmage time underneath his belt.”
Thomson Dow
“Played throughout the midfield. Very similar to our other young mids (there is a) focus on their stoppage craft and also their ball use around the ground. He got to show some of that which is great to see.
“Being able to play two games of AFL footy this year is a big step forward for him which was fantastic.”
Oleg Markov
“Only had the seven disposals but his impact was pretty big. His run off half back and also his link up when he did play on the wing was significant with his speed. It was great to see him come back and show his strengths in that part of the game.”
Luke English
“Has been probably our most consistent scrimmage player over the last few months after joining the group. He kicked five goals which was a great result for him. He has got great work rate from contest to contest and he his also very clean around goal and he has good goal sense.
“He is probably (the) leading goal kicker in the scrimmage games to be honest and it was great to see him have a really good game again and be consistent in his performance.”
Fraser Turner
“He has been consistent across half back for us, he wins the ball and uses the ball very well off the half back line, and there was no exception on the weekend in the scrimmage game. He was very clean with his ball use also.”
Will Martyn
“He is going to be a good player for us in the future. He is a big body mid and he has got a good balance between contested and uncontested possessions. He had four tackles, and in a game that is 13v13 it can be hard to get contests. But to have four tackles in a shortened game I think is pretty significant for him and the way he plays.
“It was great to see him show his strengths in that part of the game and he will continue to develop as an inside mid.”
Mabior Chol
“Played a bit of ruck and forward. He did not impact with the scoreboard but what we like about ‘Marbs’ is he can get up and down the ground.
“When the ball hits the ground, he provides a really good contest, and also in the air. He did show (that from) some of those opportunities on Saturday.”
Derek Eggmolesse-Smith
“Played down back pretty much the whole game and had some really good one-on-one contests. Playing 13v13, each end had 4v4 and it can be hard, but I think he played the system really well and gave us a couple of chop out marks which was pleasing to see.
“He was really good in that part of the game and played to his strengths when he did win the ball.”
Hugo Ralphsmith
“He played half forward mostly, and half back for one of the quarters. His running ability to get up and down the ground is one of his biggest strengths but also his marks on the lead and his overhead marking is certainly something that has been a feature of his game.
“He was rewarded with four goals also, so it was great to see him have an impact in that part of the game which was really pleasing to see for him.”
Ben Miller
“Played a bit of everywhere, he played ruck, back and also a little bit of forward. I think with ‘Funky’ he has taken a huge step forward, or a leap forward this year in terms of the roles that he has been playing.
“Traditionally he has been seen as a back only, but he has added a bit of ruck craft to his game as a second ruck option potentially, but also played a little bit of time forward. The work he has been doing with Ivan Maric has been fantastic and it is really good to see him get a little bit of reward for the work he has been doing, albeit in different positions.
“It has been great to see him develop this year and we hope to continue him in his development.”
