Richmond champion Dustin Martin added another breath-taking piece of play to his rich highlights reel in last night’s decisive victory over the Western Bulldogs at Metricon Stadium.
With just over seven minutes remaining in the match Dusty, who was a clear best-on-ground, pounced on a ball just outside the Tigers’ forward-50 area. He shrugged off a desperate tackle from Bulldog Toby McLean, fired off a handball to teammate Jack Ross, received a handball back from the young Tiger and then, from nearly 50 metres out, right on the boundary line (and wrong side for a right-footer), with the degree of difficulty 10 out of 10, he steered it through for a sensational six-pointer that clearly will be a contender for Goal of the Year.
Here’s how Channel Seven commentator and former Bulldogs star Luke Darcy described Dusty’s dazzling goal . . .
“Riewoldt’s launched well a few times. That one was fisted away. Martin, look at the power through the hips . . . almost untackleable. Got a bit of one-two. What can the champ do? He’s had a ping from the boundary line. Good looking attempt. Oh, Dusty, you are a freak! Three goals for the champ. It just had that look about it. And a little bit of icing on the cake for the Tigers. How good is that!”
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick, during his post-match press conference, said of the goal: “How he got it through, I’ve got no idea. It’s pretty special when he can do things like that.”
Dusty provided Channel Seven with a concise explanation of the goal in an on-field interview moments after the final siren . . .
“It was a bit cheeky. Should have probably passed it, but I practise them at training, so I thought why not,” he said.
