As the countdown continues to the launch of the 2012 AFL Dreamteam competition, richmondfc.com.au gives you the low down on Richmond's playing list.
Matthew Arnott
Price: $98,870
Position: Midfield
Summary: The hard-at-it youngster may take some time to break into the side. Expect him to play both in defence and in the midfield, where he will deliver long penetrating kicks and reward you with a lot of tackles.
David Astbury
Price: $98,900
Position: Defender
2011 Games: 5
2011 DT Average: 20
Summary: Missed a big chunk of 2011 due to a knee injury sustained at the SCG in round 12, after coming off a strong debut year. Started his career as a forward but moved into defence in 2011. The Tigers have a long list of key defenders, including Astbury, Alex Rance, Luke McGuane, Dylan Grimes, Jayden Post and Ben Griffiths.
Jake Batchelor
Price: $269,300
Position: Defender
2011 Games: 16
2011 DT Average: 54.44
Summary: The no.30 pick in the 2010 National Draft had a great start to his career in 2011. He uses the ball well off half back, and had a personal best 83 DT points twice in 2011. Look for him to have a strong 2012.
Andrew Browne
Price: $252,500
Position: Ruck
2011 Games: 7
2011 DT Average: 56.71
Summary: Kicked off his 2011 season with a bang after a sensational effort against the Bombers in the Dreamtime game, and set career highs in nearly all major stat categories. The 21-year-old was 19th best ruckman in the AFL for hitouts per game but 81% of his possessions are handballs. He will be in competition with Ivan Maric and Angus Graham for ruck duties.
Reece Conca
Price: $274,100
Position: Defender
2011 Games: 17
2011 DT Average: 55.41
Summary: Surprisingly listed only as a defender, the no.6 pick from the 2010 National Draft could be a good value pick for the Tigers in 2012. Coming off his first full pre-season, look for him to play a lot more in the midfield this year, where he is likely to accumulate more possessions. Had a high of 99 DT points in 2011, and solid scores of 87, 83 and 80.
Daniel Connors
Price: $224,200
Position: Defender
2011 Games: 3
2011 DT Average: 45.33
Summary: After a breakout year in 2010, he came into the 2011 with a hefty starting price of $383,500, but only managed three games due to injury. He has a history of scoring well when playing consistently, and could play a role up forward if the young backline solidifies itself.
Trent Cotchin
Price: $463,400
Position: Midfielder
2011 Games: 22
2011 DT Average: 93.68
Summary: The Rolls Royce of Richmond, the vice-captain is the most expensive Tiger to start 2012. He is a player who makes the most of his possessions. In 2011 he ranked seventh in the AFL for total kicks, fourth for kicks per game, and 70% of his possessions are kicks. Had a three-week period last year when he scored 119, 118 and 129, and he could build on those scores as Richmond’s midfield develops.
Matt Dea
Price: $201,600
Position: Defender
2011 Games: 4
2011 DT Average: 40.75
Summary: Played the last four games of 2011, and having recently been given the number seven jumper, the signs point to him being a permanent fixture in the Richmond defence. Even though he’s primarily a defender, he doesn’t give many points away, averaging only one free kick against per game.
Brett Deledio
Price: $452,100
Position: Defender/midfielder
2011 Games: 22
2011 DT Average: 91.41
Summary: As always, Deledio will be a smart buy in 2012, as he a dual position player, and with the possibility of Deledio spending more time in the midfield, look for him to increase his output in 2012. Went on a hot streak in 2011 with consecutive scores of 119, 105 and 115, and other highs of 118 and 103. He finished with an average of 91.41. Dreamteamers would like to see him use the boot more often, as he produced more handballs than kicks last season, and the potential move into the midfield could also produce more goals. He had a season high seven tackles against the Lions in Round 6, while averaging three per game for the season.
Tom Derickx
Price: $104,200
Position: Ruck
Summary: Injured for most of 2011, Derickx looks like a bargain buy for your Dreamteam in 2012. He has enjoyed an uninterrupted pre-season, and could also be value if he splits ruck duties with stints forward. At a rookie price of $104,200, he should be a lock for your back-up ruckman spot.
Stay tuned for summaries of the rest of the senior list over the next few days in the lead-up to the launch of Dreamteam.
