It wasn’t long ago that Richmond hard nut Steve Morris was in football limbo.

Awaiting a trade from Greater Western Sydney 12 months ago, the former West Adelaide defender wondered if he’d ever realise his AFL dream.

Enter the Tigers, who orchestrated a deal to get Morris to Punt Road.

“It’s a pretty nerve-wracking time. Obviously, this time last year, I was in the midst of trying to work out where I might have ended up.  And, thankfully for me, it ended up well and I’m here at Tigerland,” Morris told ‘Roar Vision’.

“Obviously, with dad playing here, it was always a strong possibility that I’d end up at Richmond, but with Ivan (Maric) being in the mix as well, that complicated things a little bit.

“I first spoke to Richmond just before the last game. They spoke to me over the weekend and said, ‘We’re coming into our last game, we’d like you to come over and train with us for a day’.

“I came out and had a bit of a run around with the boys, and that was my first inkling that they might have been keen to have me here.”

Morris thrived in his first season at Punt Road, playing 21 games and following in the footsteps of recent successful trade pick-ups, including Maric and Shaun Grigg.

“It is a fantastic club to come to.  Ivan has proven that you can play really good footy and get a second chance at a really good club, and he’s gone from strength to strength this year,” Morris said.

“I have to kick myself a few times to think that I’m actually here, and I’ve got all the resources at my disposal to improve myself as a player.”
