In-form Richmond midfielder Shaun Grigg attributes his strong start to the season to back-to-back uninterrupted pre-seasons, and a feeling of belonging at Tigerland.

Grigg has been a revelation since crossing from Carlton at the end of 2010 in a trade for Andrew Collins.

He played 21 games last season, finishing in the top 10 in the Jack Dyer Medal count.

In his first six games of 2012, Grigg has averaged 27 disposals (13th in the AFL) and six marks,

Impressively, he is ranked the no. 1 in the AFL for uncontested possessions (an average of 20.5 per match), highlighting his knack for finding space.

“I think I’ve just got the confidence up.  I’ve had two really good pre-seasons, and my body has probably been in the best shape it ever has.  Pre seasons have allowed that,” he said.

“I think it’s just playing AFL footy continually, week in and week out, and just really enjoying my footy.”

Grigg said he was enjoying his role as a versatile midfielder in 2012.

“I think it’s just a bit of versatility, and helping out our guns of Martin, Deledio and Cotchin, and trying to get those blokes to the footy and backing them up any way I can,” he said.

“I just want to be the link man, and give the footy to our good ball users who will make something happen.”

The 24-year-old is one of a raft of mature-age acquisitions to arrive at Punt Road over the last few seasons and have an instant impact, including Bachar Houli, Ivan Maric and Steven Morris.

“I think we’re just really grateful for the opportunity,” Grigg told Croc Media’s Sports Day program yesterday.

“To be backed in by the coaches is really reassuring.  It’s just repaying the faith the club has put into us.”
