For the first time in 63 years, Richmond has won a match after being held scoreless in a quarter . . .
The Tigers didn’t trouble the scorers in the third term of Sunday’s Round 8 clash with Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval, (with the Power kicking just 1.4), but finished strongly to record a 33-point win against the home side – 11.10 (76) to 5.13 (43).
You have to go all the way back to Round 14 of the 1952 season for the previous time that Richmond took the four points after failing to register any score in a quarter.
On that occasion the Tigers, who were playing Hawthorn at Glenferrie Oval, led by 49 points at half-time – 11.4 (70) to 3.3 (21) – but were still on that score at three-quarter time, with the Hawks having improved to 6.11 (47).
Richmond, however, steadied to outscore the home team 3.3 to 2.3 in the final term that day and win by 29 points – 14.7 (91) to 8.14 (62).
High-flying full-forward Jack O’Rourke kicked four goals for the Tigers, while dual Brownlow Medallist Roy Wright booted three majors.
Last Sunday’s third term was Richmond’s first scoreless quarter in any match since Round 13, 2009, against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.
On that occasion, the Tigers failed to score in the second quarter en route to a 56-point defeat – 5.6 (36) to 13.14 (92).
