Creative, young Richmond rebounding defender Derek Eggmolesse-Smith showed he’s right at home playing at the game’s highest level, producing a top-class performance in the Tigers’ 54-point victory over North Melbourne on the Gold Coast last Saturday night.

The 22-year-old, in just his fourth AFL appearance, had a team-high 23 disposals, with four rebound-50s, three inside-50s, four intercepts, four score involvements, three tackles, 471 metres gained, and took six marks.

He constantly took the game on, was totally composed with ball in hand, and delivered it with customary efficiency.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick was suitably impressed with Eggmolesse-Smith’s showing against the Roos under the Metricon Stadium lights.

“Derek’s got the ability to play the game. He can use the ball really well, he can find the ball really well. He’s just got to find his way in the AFL system,” Hardwick said.

“That’s a positive of us as a footy club, we embrace all those guys that can play, and we’re starting to see a little bit of that.

“He’s still got a long way to go, don’t get me wrong, but he’s showing some signs, which is a positive.”
