Valuable Richmond veteran, Chris Newman, believes meticulous preparation was the key to the team’s convincing victory over Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium last Saturday.
The Tigers bounced back in emphatic style, following three consecutive losses, with a 41-point win against the Power, and Newman paid tribute to the Club’s coaching group post-match.
“Credit goes to the coaches this week. They prepared us really well for Port Adelaide and I think you see, by the way we went about it, we had a real focus on trying to control the tempo of the footy, and that paid off,” he said on “Roar Vision”.
“Obviously, it’s really important to play four quarters, and we haven’t been doing that. So, I think it was just about when we had a lead, this is the way we expect to play.
“No-one was getting over-excited or nervous.
“They kicked the first two goals of the last quarter, but we just kept playing our way our fought our way through.”
Newman was one of Richmond’s best last Saturday, in his role across the backline, picking up 19 possessions, taking 10 marks, and drifting forward to kick two important goals.
“The last three or four weeks I’ve played a similar role in the back half and it’s great back there to play with some players, like ‘Rancey’, who I thought was terrific today,” Newman said.
“Not only does he spoil the ball, but he wins it back for us, which is really good.
“’Chappy’ (Troy Chaplin) had a lot of pressure on him, coming back to play his old team, and he was copping a bit early. But they seemed to quieten down, which was really good.
“I think our back six today was really good.”
