It was no average strength and conditioning session at the ME Bank Centre yesterday, as Richmond players were joined by 15-time Australia’s Strongest Man winner, Derek Boyer.
Boyer, an ambassador for Musashi, one of the Tigers’ official providers, joined in a number of activities while imparting his knowledge and experience to the players.
“It’s absolutely fantastic to come down the ME Bank Centre. It’s been a real eye-opener,” Boyer said.
“These guys have the best gear, and the best coaches available to them.”
Boyer, who stands at 190cms and weighs 140kgs, dominated the Australia’s Strongest Man contest for more than a decade, and was a competitor in the World’s Strongest Man competition eight times, from 1996-2011.
Sign up as a Richmond member for the 2014 season
For 15 years, from 1997-2011, he was undefeated in strongman competitions in Australia.
“The secret to my success is attention to detail. And it’s not so much what you do, but how you do it, that is fundamentally the most important thing,” he said.
“As these guys are training their hardest, so too are a number of other football clubs at the same time.
“So it’s not what you do, but how you do it, that separates you from the rest of the competition.
“I’ve taken a shine to a lot of them. They’re great boys, and I think the members of the Richmond Football Club should be very proud of their current list of players at the moment.”
Boyer’s first began using Musashi products in 2004, with diet, recovery and nutrient intake essential to his training regime.
“It’s all about trust in performance. That’s why I am involved personally with Musashi, and why I’ve taken them on as a brand sponsor,” he said.
“And it’s the same reason why Richmond can trust in Musashi to deliver the best nutrients possible to these performance athletes.
“That’s what it’s all about – performing at the top level, and being consistent at it for a long period of time.”
