Jayden Short has spoken of his sheer delight at overcoming a significant setback early in the 2014 season, to make his way into the AFL system, via Richmond’s rookie list.
The talented midfielder suffered a broken jaw, which forced him out of contention for selection in the Vic Metro team at this year’s under-18 championships.
But when he returned to the playing field with TAC Cup team, the Northern Knights, he managed to have a major impact, averaging 22 disposals per game in 13 appearances.
Renew or join as a Richmond member for the 2015 season
Short was subsequently overlooked in the 2014 National Draft, but snapped up by the Tigers with their first pick (No. 11 overall) in the Rookie Draft.
“I still can’t believe it . . . I thought whatever happens, happens and if it did happen it would be really good,” Short told the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges ‘Star Weekly’ newspaper.
“I fought my way back into the season and I wanted to get the best out of myself, which I did.”
Although Short spoke with the Richmond recruiters late in the season, he didn’t have high expectations of joining the Tigers, or any other league club for that matter.
“I just waited around to see what would happen,” he said.
“I took the (Rookie Draft) day off work, to see if my name would be called out, and it was.”
Short, who was ranked No. 1 in the TAC Cup competition for kicking efficiency, is under no illusions as to the challenge awaiting him at Tigerland . . .
“It’s going to be hard work, and I’m going to do my best.
“Being on the rookie list, I’ve only got one year to prove myself.”
