I’ve never really been into the ‘fantasy’ side of football, but after playing Superboot last year, I’ve decided to give it a crack.

So all you fantasy experts, please take it easy on Richo’s Racers in 2014.

Eack week, check out richmondfc.com.au for my Fantasy Wrap on how my teams are going across both AFL Fantasy and Superboot.

AFL Fantasy

My first couple of rounds were not great, I’m told. I came out of there with scores of 1940 and 1840. I’m hoping to crack 2000 this weekend when the head-to-head matches kick in!

I had some great performers over Rounds 1 and 2 – my captain Scott Pendlebury netted me 244 in week 1, before I switched captains to Gary Ablett in Round 2.  Maybe I should’ve known not to use Gaz when he had Crowley following him around all day. He finished on just 80 points, while Pendles racked up 152. Lesson learned.

There have been some good cheap players who dominated over the first two rounds, including Dom Tyson (116 and 111) and Aaron Sandilands (110 and 104). I’m told the key to AFL Fantasy is getting your cheap picks right, so I think I’m on the right track here. Jared Polec from Port Adelaide is another ripper who I might bring off the bench this week.

I’m trying to keep it neutral so I’ve only gone with two Tigers in my team – Brett Deledio and Jack Riewoldt. Lids was a ripper with 132 points (the most of any Tiger) in week 1. He fell away slightly in Round 2 with just 74 points, but his history speaks for itself, so he will definitely be a stayer. Matt Thomas is also one to watch – he wound up on 108 points in Round 1 and 109 in Round 2, which at $271K is an absolute bargain.

Hopefully I’ll have a better score to report next week after I have my head around the game a bit better. The safety net of unlimited trades has gone, so wish me luck!

Superboot

Superboot on the other hand – this is my kind of game. I am sitting pretty at 11th position on the leaderboard!

For those of you who don’t know, you only pick one player per week in Superboot. Pick who you think will kick the most goals, and those goals get added to your tally. It’s that simple.

I picked Jarryd Roughead in Round 1 – he’s the reigning Coleman Medallist, and he always performs well down in Tassie. Roughie kicked five goals, the equal most for round 1. I also used one of my wildcards – you get two during the whole competition, and using a card means your player’s score is doubled. I thought Roughie was a good bet and I’m glad I went for it early!

In Round 2, I went with Josh Kennedy from West Coast. He kicked a respectable 4 goals, which was not too bad. I am just four goals away from top spot, but it’s still a long season ahead. Now, I just need to be strategic with my next wildcard – I think I’ll wait a couple of months to see who is hitting good form.

There’s still time to join both comps – click here to play against me in Superboot, and click here to join me in the Richmond Fan League in AFL Fantasy – the invite code is WJR2NJ3H.
