Richmond star key defender Alex Rance was blown away with his success in last night’s Jack Dyer Medal count.

Rance capped a superb season by winning his first Jack Dyer Medal in his seventh year of league football.

“I guess I never sort of really dreamed that I could ever be the best of any club. I never got best and fairests when I was a kid . . .
I never really thought this was possible,” he told a packed Crown Palladium ballroom.

Rance provided a typically honest assessment of his overall performance throughout 2015.

“I thought it was probably the most consistent season that I’ve had,” he said.

“I had a few nightmares in there, which ‘Dimma’ (coach Damien Hardwick) probably wasn’t too happy about – probably the Adelaide and the Melbourne games – but I’ll try and rule them out next year.”

Rance then paid a special tribute to his teammates at Tigerland.

“We do have a special group,” he said.

“It’s so much fun to come to the change-rooms and for you to let me muck around and be a fool.

“I know I’m not funny all the time, but I try to be. And, as long at it makes you guys laugh, then I’m pumped with that.

“I love playing with you guys.

“It’s a challenge, but it’s a challenge that I love, standing side by side with you guys.”
