Richmond has shored up its position in the National Draft over the next couple of years following a deal with Gold Coast just before the 2011 Trade Week deadline.

The Tigers traded the round one compensatory selection they received from Adelaide last year, as part of the deal for Richard Tambling, to the Suns.

In return, they secured a first round selection, at pick 26, in the 2011 National Draft, and a second round compensatory selection that Gold Coast gained from Port Adelaide last year.

“Gold Coast only planned to have one pick in the National Draft.  They did not intend to use 26 and came to us with the offer of changing compensation picks and giving us 26,” Richmond’s Opposition and List Analyst, Blair Hartley, told Tiger fans today in an exclusive post-Trade Week webchat.

“It is important to understand that the end of first round compensation selection comes after first round priority selections, both at the beginning and the end of first round, also behind first round and mid-first round compensation selections.

“Given 2012 is forecast as a strong draft, we feel this selection will be around the mid to late 20s range.

“The second round compensation selection we acquired from Gold Coast today is aligned to where Port Adelaide finish on the ladder and still gives us an opportunity to pick three players in the first two rounds of the 2012 National Draft . . .

“Overall, we feel this puts us in a strong position for the (2011) National Draft, having two first round picks, while still having three picks in the first two rounds of the 2012 National Draft.

“We have to decide in March of next year whether we want to activate the compensation pick.  At this stage it looks like a bumper draft, and it would be most likely that we would activate it . . .”

Hartley also said that the Club was yet to determine exactly how many selections it would have in this year’s National Draft, given final list lodgement is not due until mid-November.
