A Richmond street named after Tiger Immortal Jack Dyer is a step closer to becoming a reality, after a meeting of Yarra Council yesterday.

The council endorsed a proposal for ‘Jack Dyer Street’, which would be located in a new housing development area bound by Coppin, Highett, Palmer and Griffiths streets.

A crowd of Richmond fans attended the council meeting, to demonstrate their passion the cause, and Dyer’s niece, Gabrielle Turner, spoke of her uncle’s contribution to the community.

The Richmond Football Club has thrown its support behind the push, writing a letter to council and encouraging fans to contribute to an online petition, which attracted more than 1250 signatures.

"We had a pretty substantial representation from the football club ... people were so emotional about Jack Dyer that they were in tears," said Mayor Jackie Fristacky.

"He was such a mainstay of the Richmond community - not just as a football player, but a long-term resident and benefactor - and in so many ways he was a legend."

While Yarra Council rubber stamped its approval of the newly-named street, there are still a number of administrative processes to undertake, including approval from the Place Names Committee.
