The threat posed by powerfully-built Port Adelaide full-forward Charlie Dixon to Richmond’s backline in Saturday night’s clash at the MCG, has clearly been intensified due to the absence of the Tigers’ star key defender Alex Rance through suspension.
Dixon has had a moderate start to his playing career at the Power this season, after joining them in a trade from Gold Coast late last year.
The 202cm, 110kg spearhead has kicked 10 goals in five games, but Richmond assistant coach Ben Rutten, a former top-notch full-back with Adelaide, is fully aware of Dixon’s match-winning capabilities.
“He’s an important target, and a real focal point for them,” Rutten said on this week’s edition of Roar Vision’s ‘Opposition Analysis’.
“They’re going to him a lot, and he’s involved in a lot of contests.
“He also moves really well at ground level as well.
“We’re obviously aware of what he can do . . .
“It’ll probably be Dave Astbury’s job on him, but it’ll also be a team responsibility to get the job done on him.”
Port Adelaide’s rebounding defender Jasper Pittard also figures prominently in Richmond’s plans for Sunday night’s match.
“We’re well aware of the amount of territory he gains with his possessions . .,” Rutten said.
“He’s a long, penetrating kick, he also runs and carries and bounces. So we need to take that away from him.
“Our forwards, as much as want them kicking goals, they’ve also got a responsibility to start our defence.”
