In a special series, richmondfc.com.au is asking Tiger fans to select the best player to have worn each of the most significant guernsey numbers in the Club’s history.  To assist in your quest, we have profiled those players who have racked up a minimum of 50 games in the number.  The game totals and years listed relate to those played while wearing the specific number, not total Richmond career numbers.  Today, our focus is on No. 35.

No. 35

Michael Pickering – 136 games, 1984-1991

Talented, courageous utility player.   Despite having a relatively slender build, he consistently displayed great bravery in hurling himself into packs to compete for marks.  Was fearless in pursuit of the ball, either at aerial or ground level, and absorbed considerable punishment on-field during his playing career without ever flinching.  He was an excellent mark and, although not quick, covered plenty of ground throughout a match due to his elite endurance.  Won Richmond’s Best First Year Player award in 1984 and the Jack Dyer Medal in 1988.  Also finished runner-up in the Best and Fairest in 1987 and third in 1985.

Matthew White – 105 games, 2006-2013

Speedy wingman, who had a checkered playing career at Richmond.  At his best, he was a real weapon for the Tigers due to his explosive pace and ability to break the lines, as well as kick goals.  Had a significant impact during his last couple of years with Richmond in the substitute’s role, before accepting an offer as a free agent to join Port Adelaide.

Chris Bond – 90 games, 1994-1997

Tenacious on-baller, who provided Richmond with fine value after joining the Club from Carlton, where he spent three seasons.  Thrived on the greater opportunities presented to him at Tigerland and became an important team member due to his ball-winning ability, efficient disposal, hard running, courage and exemplary work ethic.  Developed into one of the best taggers in the competition.  Won the Jack Dyer Medal in 1994 and played a key role in the Tigers’ 1995 finals campaign.

Brian Davie – 89 games, 1953-1959

Rugged, reliable backman.  Was renowned for his ability to nullify opponents through tight defensive work.

Chris Newman – 76 games, 2002-2005

Spent his early years at Richmond in the No. 35 guernsey.   Developed into an extremely dependable defender for the Tigers.  Possessed great courage and poise and provided plenty of opportunities for teammates further afield through his precise left-foot kicks.  Captained the Club for four years from 2009-2012.
